Pilates, from mat to reformer to all things Pilates, is today's "it" exercise program. With all the media attention, celebrity endorsements, and rehabilitation successes, there is no doubt that it is a program for every body at any age. But ask what Pilates is and you will get many different and varied explanations. What is Pilates? According to Joseph Pilates, it is mindful exercise that integrates the principles of control, centering, concentration, precision, flow of motion and breath as its core. It is this philosophy of movement that connects the many different styles and approaches to the program. Whether its purpose is rehabilitation, athletic performance or postural alignment, the results are achieved through the power of the principles of Pilates. How do we bring these principles into public awareness and how can we use our common principles to embrace all styles as a unified community?
