Depression Is a Leading Cause of Disability

Depression is the leading cause of disability, as measured by years lived with a disability, and the fourth leading contributor to disease worldwide in 2000, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO projects that depression will be ranked second worldwide for all ages and both sexes by 2020. Currently, depression is the second cause of years of life lost due to disability among people of both sexes between the ages 15 and 44 years.■
