American
college students represent a large potential market for body-mind activities
that promote relaxation and stress reduction. Students nationwide report that
the top five factors impacting their academic performance are stress, colds and
flus, sleep difficulties, concern for troubled friends or family members, and
relationship difficulties, according to the American College Health Association
2006 National College Health Assessment. In response to these findings, colleges
across the country are making efforts to educate students on good sleep habits
and relaxation.
At the State University of New
York, Buffalo, the Student Wellness Center held a “Snoozefest” event. In
addition to offering tips on good sleep hygiene, the program included yoga and
guided relaxation demonstrations. To promote student well-being, the Student
Wellness Center offers free yoga and Pilates classes during the school term.
