Practicing a daily yoga routine designed specifically for pre- and post-menopausal women helped women feel better and experience less severe menopausal symptoms.
For a pilot study published in the July issue of Maturitas (2007; 57 [3], 286–95), University of Washington and University of Pittsburgh researchers recruited 12 women who were having at least four hot flashes per day at least 4 days per week. Investigators assessed symptom intensity, level of interference with daily life and subjective sleep quality. Subjects then took part in a 10-week yoga program, practicing for 15 minutes daily at home and attending one 75-minute class per week. At the end of the 10 weeks, researchers re-evaluated the participants.
The 11 individuals who completed the study noted improvement in their perception of symptoms and enjoyed stronger feelings of well-being. According to journals kept by the subjects, the number of hot flashes did not diminish.
The study authors recommended that further research be done with more subjects and a control group.■
