Imagine picking up your local newspaper and reading the following two front-page stories:
Tai Chi Good for College Coeds
Thirty college coeds who participated in a biweekly tai chi program for 3 months at Georgia State University in Atlanta had an improved perception of both physical and mental health, according to results published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine (2004; 32 [3], 453-9). While physical measures of bodily pain and general health improved after 3 months of tai chi, measures of mental and emotional function, vitality and mental health showed significant improvement. Given the positive results of this short trial, the investigators recommended that colleges and universities should consider offering tai chi classes to students as part of their physical activity programming.
Yoga for Low-Back Pain?
Yoga, as well as other exercise that promotes balance, strength and flexibility, may be effective for people with low-back pain, according to an article published in the Journal of Family Practice (2004; 53 [8], 661-2). The authors reviewed more than 120 studies on the use of yoga for various medical conditions. No studies, however, directly evaluated the effect of yoga on back pain. In a survey of 3,000 people practicing yoga for health ailments, 98% said that yoga benefited them. Thirty-eight percent of survey respondents suffered from back pain. The researchers pointed out the need for more studies but noted that there were no reports of harm from yoga therapy used for low-back pain.
